Hello, and thanks for visiting. I’m Karen WhiteKaren, a freelance ELT (English Language Teaching) project manager, editor and editorial trainer based in rural Wiltshire in the UK.

I’ve been freelancing since 2008, having worked for Macmillan Education, Richmond ELT, Burlington Books and Prentice Hall, and working my way from Assistant Editor to Publishing Manager. Before that I taught in Greece, moving to a university in Turkey where I discovered an interest in materials development which I’ve been lucky enough to make into a career. And although I loved working in house in publishing, I realise now that it’s being my own boss that gives me the greatest satisfaction.

SfEP-badge-[Advanced-Professional-Member]-RetinaMost of my freelance work is project management of multi-level, multi-component courses. Recent clients include Cengage/National Geographic Learning, Oxford University Press, ELTjam and Macmillan Education. I also enjoy training new editors and project managers, and am an Advanced Professional member of the Society for Editors and Proofreaders.

In the last few years I’ve developed an interest in creating a network for other freelancers in ELT through my White Ink Limited Facebook page, which has led to me setting up the ELT Freelancers’ Database and Awaydays with a freelancing friend. These networks and events give me, and others, the opportunity to keep in touch with trends and developments in our field, which it can be difficult to do when you work from home on your own.

I’m also proud to be one-third of ELT Teacher 2 Writer. Our aim is to put ELT publishers in touch with writers, and to provide writer training at the same time. We have approximately 20¬†ebooks currently available on Amazon and Smashwords, with more coming soon.

So, I enjoy networking and working with writers, editors and teachers, so when the IATEFL Materials Writing Special Interest Group¬†(MaWSIG) was established, I was keen to be involved with that. I’m currently the Social Media Co-ordinator and enjoy helping put together events that bring all areas of our industry together.

In my spare time I enjoy keeping fit and spending time with family and friends. Some of that time is spent in our homemade cinema in the garage, which is complete with tiered seating and surround-sound. Bring your own drinks and snacks!
